  • Presented is a wonderful English sterling silver vinaigrette. This piece dates
to 1885. The vinaigrette is done in a lovely classical egg form, with its
surface fully engraved. These engravings are quite intricate, obviously done
with a high degree of skill. The front of the vinaigrette has a monogram of
‘ECF’ in elegant script, inside an oval cartouche. The lid of the vinaigrette
unscrews to reveal a pierced interior grate, which lifts up so the vinaigrette
can be filled with whatever you like.
This piece is in great overall condition. The interior grate and the lid both
close well. The details of the engraving are still crisp. There are no splits,
no dents, no breaks, no monogram removals, and no repairs.
This piece is hallmarked on the side with the lion passant for sterling
silver, the anchor for the city of Birmingham, the date letter L for 1885, and
the maker’s mark that has unfortunately been partially obscured by time. The
inside of the lid is also hallmarked with the lion passant and the date letter.
The egg is about 2 1/4 inches long and about 1 1/2 inches wide at its widest
    point.
This piece weighs 38.9 grams or 1.4 regular ounces.
